For our first recommended digital read, Weird Lit Mag is pointing you, yes you, you weirdo, at another online mag called Space Squid, where you can find fresh stories and oddities monthly. Space Squid publishes science fiction, humor, fantastical stories, flash, and occasionally, web comics. One of our authors from Weird Lit Mag’s first issue, Matthew Amati, hipped us to this cool journal, where he’s an associate editor, and we’re so glad he did.
What makes Space Squid special is its ephemerality policy. You can’t say, well, I’ll just read the latest issue later, because once the month’s up—those pieces are gone! The fleeting nature of Space Squid’s content keeps things moving, and they’re only as good as what’s on the menu for the day. That takes guts. It also means their highlighted piece is pretty darn fun to read.
Space Squid has its home in Austin, Texas, where they’ve been awarded “Best of Austin” by the Austin Chronicle, and they were also featured by WIRED in 2010 for putting a whole special edition on clay tablets, which is about as far from a digital read as you can get. So yeah, they’re weird! I read their latest story about a quinceañera crasher who finds a lovely connection with an unexpected new friend while searching for aliens. I’m still thinking about it weeks later. By the time this article is published, that story might be gone. So don’t sleep on the Squid!
