We were immediately delighted by weegbree's fantastical story, "Brood/Pain/Pan: A Breadtale in Three Movements." If you hunger for more of the author's delectable prose, read our interview below!

What do you hope readers gain from your work?

A sense of wonder and an immediate urge to sing or cook or call your grandmother.

Do you know any magic?

All weeds know magic.

A picture of the weed weegbree in front of a pole, growing through the concrete.

What’s your favorite musical instrument? Why?

My neighbor Angelica Archangelica, disguised as day cream, her raw fibers trying with all their might to preserve and protect your individuality; creating expectant, soothing circumstances that make you forget yourself. Turn all focus outward, let your shell become hard enough to stay upright, while everything on the inside melts away. Be soft, but not weak, someone will advise you only in a distant future, long after you became just a shell, a hollow stem from which a melancholic “whoo-hoo” could be heard in strong winds. A dark, moaning choir of self-pity, even though everything could be traced back to our own choices. Too late. How much choice was there exactly, you say. This question might be legitimate on paper, but in practice means that the soothing always falls to the other.

What’s the one problem with the human condition you wish could be fixed?

Fear of the unknown.

Tell us a secret.

Many believe that weeds exist because of the cracks in the pavement, when in reality we are the ones who cause them. Here's how you slowly crack the system:

take care of your roots,

train your resilience,

grow inconspicuously,

be with many.

Hailing from Rotterdam the Netherlands, weegbree has published in the Dutch anthology De Komeet (De Geus) and in HSF, the magazine of the Dutch science fiction and fantasy association. In 2024, weegbree attended the Clarion workshop in San Diego and since then has started translating some of their fiction into English.
